Bethesda, Md., November 21st, 2005 AREVA Awarded Progress Energy Fleet-wide Fuel Contract AREVA’s joint subsidiary with Siemens, Framatome ANP, has been awarded a contract to provide commercial nuclear fuel for the Raleigh, N.C., based Progress Energy’s fleet of five nuclear power plants in the Carolinas and Florida. The contract value is not being released. Under the contract, Framatome ANP will provide a total of 17 fuel reloads, and Progress Energy has the option for an additional 10 reloads. Firm fuel deliveries will begin in the spring of 2008 and continue through 2015. “We have applied four decades of manufacturing experience and best practices from around the world to achieve the industry’s most advanced fuel technology and fabrication processes,” said John Matheson, Framatome ANP Inc. senior vice president. “Our commitment to producing the highest quality, most reliable commercial fuel available will result in greater performance and more value for Progress Energy’s customers and shareholders.” Framatome ANP operates fuel manufacturing facilities in Lynchburg, Va., and Richland, Wash. The company’s advanced fuel is designed to achieve longer cycles and higher burnup rates in today’s nuclear power plants. Nuclear power generation is free of CO2 emissions and enhanced fuel utilization contributes greatly to lower fuel costs and reduced spent fuel storage inventories. Progress Energy Carolinas Inc. owns and operates the two-unit, 1,838-MW Brunswick Nuclear Plant located near Southport, N.C.; the single-unit, 900-MW Harris Nuclear Plant located near New Hill, N.C.; and the single-unit, 710-MW H.B.
