A cost effective reactor

Significantly reduced power generation costs

In order to cope with the challenge of deregulated electricity markets, the next generation of nuclear power plants must be even more competitive.
The EPR offers significantly lower power generation costs of electricity thanks to a focus on economic competitiveness throughout the design process.
The advantage over fossil plants is even more pronounced when the "external costs" related to the environment and human health are taken into account.
High level of competitiveness

a unit power in the 1,600+ MWe net electrical power. This is the highest unit power to date and, thanks to a larger core (more fuel assemblies) and 4 primary loops, provides an attractive cost per installed kWe,
a high overall efficiency, presently the highest value ever achieved for water reactors, allowed by an efficient steam generator with axial economizer (giving improved steam pressure and steam quality),
construction time benefiting from experience feedback and continuous improvement of construction methodology and task sequencing,
design for a 60-year service life, (compared to the reactors currently in operation, designed for a 40-year service life),
enhanced and more flexible fuel utilization: the fuel assemblies are designed to achieve high discharge burn up (> 70 GWd/tU) and core design allows a fuel cycle length of up to 24 months,
maximized power generation with an availability design target of 93%* averaged over the entire service life of the plant, obtained through: - more efficient maintenance, - access to the reactor building during power operation before reactor shutdown, allows preparation of maintenance and refueling tasks to be carried out at power with minimum loss of availability, - shorter outages: the maintenance is simplified due to equipment standardization and compliant with the EUR (European Utility Requirements).
* Depending on local requirements for in-service inspection and fuel cycle length.
