Designed for sustainability

The EPR optimizes the use of nuclear fuels and minimizes the production of long-lived radioactive wastes. Its large core is surrounded by a neutron reflector to ensure that a maximum number of neutrons contribute to energy generation in the core. This means that the EPR uses fewer uranium resources and produces less long-lived radioactive wastes when compared with the water reactors in operation today.

The EPR design features a number of innovations which offer significant advantages (per MWh produced) in favor of  sustainable development, including:

a reduction of heatsink water consumption,
a lower heat up of cooling water,
13 percent saving on uranium consumption,
Reduction in long-lived actinides generated per MWh,
Greater fuel flexibility: MOX (Mixed Oxide Uranium) and REU (Reprocessed Enriched Uranium).
