The Path of Greatest Certainty

Global certainty for generations to come

The EPR is a 1,600+ MWe-class PWR. PWR technology represents 56% of the world’s operational nuclear capacity (205 million kW out of a total of 368 - as of 31/12/2005). 102 Nuclear power plants have been built or under construction by AREVA in 11 countries, of which 93 are still in operation. The reactor’s innovative design incorporates safety features to prevent core meltdown and mitigate any possible consequences. It also offers exceptional resistance to external hazards, such as airplane crashes, earthquakes.
A leader in state-of-the-art technology

Its main features benefit from the following innovations:
the reinforced defense-in-depth approach provides enhanced protection, including in the event of abnormal scenarios such as external hazards or a severe accident leading to core meltdown,
a set of safeguard systems, ensuring a quadruple redundancy,
the reactor core, is surrounded by a heavy neutron reflector, and is designed so as to provide high flexibility in terms of fuel management,
the core vessel made of optimized steel, resistant to aging and designed with a reduced number of welds,
significant reduction in effluent release (including radioactive and chemical) and radioactive waste for the same amount of energy produced during normal operation,
significant reduction of radioactive releases in case of accidents including the case of a highly improbable event that damages the core,
the instrumentation and control (I&C) system, the operator friendly human-machine interface and fully computerized plant control room, a 1,600+ MWe reactor with high efficiency, extended service life, enhanced fuel utilization and increased availability, enhanced fuel flexibility.
These innovations contribute to the EPR's high level of performance, operational efficiency and economic competitiveness.
