Energy dependence

Nuclear power is the leading source of energy in Finland, accounting for 25 percent of the energy produced. Today, Finland has a concern regarding its energy situation. Its internal natural resources are limited, while the consumption per inhabitant is high (15,600 kWh), and growing at an annual rate of 2 percent.
Consequently: nearly 70 percent of the energy used must be imported. This major constraint threatens the country’s energy independence and economic balance.

Solution: the newest generation of power plant

Finland decided to develop its nuclear energy capacity in partnership with AREVA NP. In December 2003, Framatome ANP, now AREVA NP, and the Finnish utility TVO, signed a contract for the construction of the fifth Finnish nuclear reactor, Olkiluoto 3. TVO opted for EPR technology. This will make Finland the first country to operate a Generation III+ reactor.

AREVA NP, project leader

As the leading contractor in a consortium established with Siemens, AREVA NP, will supply TVO with a turnkey EPR system:
AREVA NP is responsible for supplying the nuclear island, as well as the first reactor core,
Siemens is in charge of the conventional island,
local businesses will handle 40 percent of this project.
|
In addition, AREVA NC, a subsidiary of the AREVA group, will supply the uranium and related services for the processing needed to produce the fuel for the first years of operation of Olkiluoto 3.
