People's Republic of China

The spectacular development of the Chinese economy has stimulated strong growth in energy demand. In 2007, China has an installed nuclear capacity of 9 GWe with 11 nuclear power plants in operation, generating 2 % of China's electricity production. As part of its 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2011), China decided to increase the proportion of its nuclear generated electricity from 2% to 4% to reach 40 GWe in 2020. Forecasts show that the country needs around 30 GWe of additional installed power, that is the equivalent of power output from twenty 1,500 MWe reactors.
AREVA, a long-standing partner of the Chinses nuclear industry

For over 20 years, China has been developing nuclear technology for electricity generation using particularly AREVA's expertise and knowledge.
Participation in the construction of 9 of the 11 operating plants in China. In this context, AREVA NP has supplied:
the nuclear islands for the Daya Bay plants (2 x1000 MWe) and for Ling Ao – Phase one (2x1000 MWe) in Guangdong province,
equipment for the Qinshan 1 (1PWRx300MWe), Qinshan 2 – Phase one (2PWRSx600MWe) and Tianwan (2VVERsx1000 MWe) plants.
Signature of partnership agreements with research institutes and companies to provide services for all of China’s nuclear equipment.
Signature of technology transfer agreements enabling China to access all reactor technologies and manufacture efficient fuels.
Duplication of existing generation II plants

For Qinshan 1 (1 x 300MWe, a Chinese designed reactor):
the supply and installation of equipment, notably a reactor vessel head and control rod mechanisms,
modernization of its safety Instrumentation & Control systems.

Generation III plants

China is developing a nuclear program based on third generation technology.
On November 26th, 2007, AREVA signed a historic agreement for the nuclear power industry. AREVA, in conjunction with CGNPC :
will build two new generation EPR reactors and,
will provide all the materials and services required to operate them. The EPRs will be built in Taishan in Guangdong province. The agreements mark the start of a global and sustainable cooperation. An engineering joint venture will shortly be created.
In the same spirit, an agreement under which CGNPC has agreed to buy 35% of the production of UraMin has been signed.
