High and very high temperature reactors (HTR/VHTR)

AREVA NP, active member of the International Generation IV Forum

AREVA NP participates in research carried out in the context of the International Generation IV Forum, created in 2001. The mission of the forum is to select and develop future nuclear production systems for the target dates of 2030-2035, integrating sustainable development criteria (safety, competitiveness, optimization of resources, reduction of waste, resistance to external threats, etc.).
The International Generation IV Forum brings together nine countries: South Africa, Brazil, Canada, South Korea, the United States, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Union (through the CEA – the French Atomic Energy Commission).
These nuclear systems of the future are still in the design stage, and will be based on new technological innovations.
ANTARES, AREVA NP’s Generation IV offer

AREVA NP has developed the ANTARES reactor (AREVA New Technology based on Advanced gas-cooled Reactors for Energy Supply) in the context of international discussions and research.
ANTARES is based on the concept of a gas-cooled (helium) modular reactor.
It will be able to produce electricity and hydrogen as the result of very high temperature operation, featuring a high-thermodynamic efficiency*.
Through its design and modularity, ANTARES also provides:
fuel management advantages,
economic savings resulting from higher productivity,
broad operational flexibility to cope with extreme variations in electricity consumption,
simple integration of future improvements. These advantages make VHTR an interesting technology for the construction of commercial nuclear reactors. For this reason, AREVA NP is using the ANTARES program to make VHTR a pivotal aspect of its new product development.
* Current efficiency for electricity production: 45% for HTR (850°C) and 48% for VHTR (± 1000°C).
