Innovative reactor design concepts

From today's boiling water reactor to the SWR 1000

The SWR 1000 project - which is being conducted under a contract from the German electric utilities in cooperation with other European countries - represents an entirely different approach. The main feature of this new design is the use of passive systems for the control of accidents and transients. Activation and operation of these safety systems is based entirely on the laws of nature. Furthermore, additional use of systems and components that have already proven their reliability in service will ensure that positive experience gained from past operation will be fully incorporated in the new design concept. This will enable system simplifications to be implemented that will result in competitive power generating costs, even for the medium-capacity unit of 1000 MW.
