AREVA NP deploys Advanced Repair Technique at Belgian Nuclear Reactor

AREVA NP signed a contract with Doel Nuclear Power Station in Belgium to perform an advanced weld repair technique.

With this contract, AREVA NP’s Inside Diameter Temper Bead (IDTB) weld repair method, developed by AREVA NP’s U.S. team and already implemented on 183 penetrations since 2000 in the United States, will be performed for the first time outside the United States. This method will support the Doel plant’s continued operation, enabling it to provide clean and reliable electricity, avoiding complex manipulations and serving the plant’s overall nuclear safety in the best possible way.

During an outage in summer 2018, an AREVA NP team from the United States will complete the IDTB weld repair, as well as reactor vessel head inspections.

AREVA NP’s IDTB technique is a proven method to address primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) on reactor vessel heads. This technology replaces the penetration pressure boundary, eliminating the risk of embedded flaws. It also addresses all types of PWSCC, ensuring reliable future operation of the plant. AREVA NP has performed 77 percent of all reactor vessel head penetration repairs in the United States.
