Hinkley Point C

With the Hinkley Point C project, AREVA NP is set to participate in one of the major industrial projects of the coming decade.

EDF Energy is building the first new nuclear power station in the UK for a generation at Hinkley Point in Somerset. The two Hinkley Point C EPR reactors will provide reliable, low-carbon electricity that will meet approximately 7% of the UK's electricity needs.

AREVA NP has been awarded several sub-contracts for the construction of 2 EPR by NNB*on the Hinkley Point site.

* NNB is the structure created by EDF Energy, EDF's UK subsidiary for the Hinkley Point project, in partnership with the Chinese nuclear group CGNC (China General Nuclear Corporation).

Fast facts

  • Net electric output: 2 x 1,600 MWe
  • Reactor thermal output: 4,500 MWth
  • NNB is responsible for the overall project management and is the project owner

Scope

Within the scope of the Hinkley Point C project, AREVA has won several subcontracts to the value of over 5 billion euros.

  • The production activities of both nuclear steam supply systems, since their design and their procurement, to their commissioning, will be under the responsibility of AREVA NP. That will also be the case for the execution and supply of the NPP's operational and safety instrumentation and control system.
  • On the other hand, an agreement on the supply of fuel was also signed. AREVA NP will be responsible for the long-term fuel fabrication and supplying, necessary for the operation of both nuclear steam supply systems.

The part of the project concerning preliminary fuel fabrication activities, including the extraction of uranium, its conversion and enrichment, will be conducted by AREVA.
